About their skills and effectiveness, it's too hard to pick one only between Cannavaro and Nesta. As 'Mina H' said, Nesta has a great advantage in his age, but about performance they're really close. Both have great skills, focus, correctness and effectiveness, and both avoid that 'star posing' in & out of the field... Carefully looking for a difference, it needs to say Cannavaro is a natural born leader, the better fitted captain. He leads the whole team and not only the defender line... and he is more effective when attacking, with dangerous headers when corner kicks are shooted (besides he is shorter than Nesta).
Nesta is an elegant player, and the crowd loves full of style defenders (Maldini is the best).
So I need to give a little advantage to Cannavaro.
Pirlo is a key player and cover an unusual role, especially in Italian ships - back playmaker, playing exactly in front of the the defenders line. My opinion is his position isn't a natural choose, but a mature tactical training product. If he was faster, his position had to be the common centre midfield playmaker (Platini / Zidane / Maradona / Baggio / Totti style, offensive mid). Being a little slow and good in tackling and marking, playing more back let him to show his full potential in passing and invent great plays. Milan lose some match when the opponents had a player marking him directly, but you can easily figure it out how it's difficult to sacrifice a midfielder to play onward only to mark an opponent, this is a difficult tactical task.
Gattuso is the classic defensive midfielder, he shines between those specialists with his tackling and physio skills and his endurance. He's a correct fighter and has great tactical sense, being quick and ready to spot the right movements when playing offensive and defensive, and especially to cover teammates when opponents are overnumbering the midfield or running past. Great player.
And again it's hard to pick one. They're playing in different roles, and Pirlo's one own is unique... and this the key - if you need or like Pirlo's role, you can only choose him. If not, let's pick Gattuso instead, every team needs defensive midfielder(s)...
Anyway ... why not have they all playing together???

This is a group of extremely talented men, so this it is very difficult to make a choice out of them. Here goes: Cannavaro is a stronger and better player than Nesta. Cannavaro has a lot of heart, has the muscular physique & such incredible skill as a defender. With him in front of the the goal, you don't have to worry about anything getting past; it is a rare day when he can't clear the area around the goal. As for Gattuso & Pirlo, I find them such diverse players, that its difficult to choose. Gattuso goes for brute strength and forces plays, while Pirlo finesses and creates opportunities.

I pick Nesta, 1st because he's younger and he's got more years to play more than Cannavaro, Nest didn't have his whole chance during the world cup, but he's better i believe.
As for Pirlo and Gattuso, it's unfair to compare them, cuz they don't play at the same positions, Pirlo is a playmaker while Gattuso is a defensive midfielder, but concerning football skills and techniques, Pirlo wins for sure on the other hand Gattuso has got much more stamina and he's a fighter in the field, but still no skilled, like he can't shoot free kicks as Pirlo or provide precise passes to his other team mates.

Cannavaro is definately hotter!!! HOT HOT HOT HOT and better too. lol well I haven't really seen Nesta play since he got out in the world cup. lol hmmm the second one is hard but I guess I'd choose Pirlo once again for both. As long as he has his nice flipped out hair then I'm fine. But his haircut now....blahhh!!!

i can call countless that are already a pair: a million-Buffon and Cannavaro (however Materazzi is their lover...) 2-Gattuso and Camoranesi 3-Totti and Pirlo 4-Grosso and De Rossi 5-Del Piero and Gilardino 6-Perrotta and Inzaghi 7-Toni and Nesta Yeah... it is only countless...

Cannavaro and Nesta r both hot I cant decide . but Cannavaro is better .
Gattuso and Pirlo both good but Pirlo is better and hotter.
the Hottest of them all is Gilardino .

I don't find any of them attractive (if I was a woman it could be different) but I like Cannavaro and Gattuso. They're both annoying, and you hate to play against either one, so that's why. Although my wife says Nesta is hot so... that's that.

I choose: Cannavaro, I think he's better cause he's an amazing player and is talented. And always shows love for the team
Pirlo is hotter and he's better because he has AMAZING free kicks and corner kicks always on target.
