When I was in high school in the late 80s, we used to say things occasionally, from time to time, about something being gay or not. It seems like everyone is saying "is this gay, do you think this is gay, thats so gay" like never before.

The only thing I can come up with is a reaction to gays asserting their rights and possibly the influence of the hip hop culture.

Kids use it in a sense of being 'uncool', not in the sense of homosexuality. By saying that your girlfriend broke up with you for another dude and thats gay, doesn't mean its a homosexual act, it just sucks

Yes, the gay community is trying very very hard to become a member of the accepted class. And they are coming from all areas of society in building up their legitimacy.

Back in the 1970's the American Psychiatric Association or similar agency had 7 members on their panel that yearly would determine the details of mental problems, medical coding and such. During this time, 3 or 4 of it's elected members were of the gay lifestyle and they made a decision to remove homosexuality from the listing of mental disorders. There use to be a CPT code for the ailment, but it is gone now. It was just the beginning.

So now kids think that gay people just "decide" to be gay or straight, but it's more of an exposure issue. Being exposed to the gay perspective as being the norm over and over confuses children. Now kids want to make sure that they are not tied in to a gay issue. Kids are wanting to make certain that they are not placed in a group that they are not comfortable in. So now, something being "gay" is something targeted to promote or represent the gay lifestyle - perhaps a tie into something they don't want to be.

I feel the SAME WAY as you do! When I was in school, occasionally would someone mention if something was gay or not as a joke. But once I graduated from highschool, and moreso after I got out of college, it seemed everyone was saying something was gay all the time, or talking about someone being gay for real, or someone trying to beat up someone who seemed gay.

It almost seems like the first things that come to mind when someone meets another person is them wondering about your sexuality. And if your straight and bring up questions like this, you could be considered gay.Things aren't as they used to be, and it's annoying.

I think it's because so many poeple are either gay, bisexual, sexually confused and suppressing it, or curious, even those who are really straight. It's always on their mind so they're always bringing it up, making YOU think about why so many people are so obbessed with it. It's because of the cultural shock of the sexuality movement.

It's the worst when your a straight guy, because now, just about anything you do can be considered gay, and if someone thinks your gay when your straight and wants to mess your life up somehow because of their own insecurities, now YOU have to worry about it as well. And it's always nice when some retard askes you, "why does being called gay bother you Is it because your gay?" When clearly you'll be bothered if it meant you getting punched in the head for being mistakened as gay.

No...these days aren't the same any more.

I think it is a political mindset that has creeped its way into everyone's unconsciousness. All those shows on TV with "over the top" portrayl of super hip gays, the radical right with their anti-gay messages, and the left with their gay marriages has really brought all these issues to the forefront of American culture and thought.
What we have is a stereotype of the gay person, and we apply it to everything. Just like when I see something steretypically redneck, I'll think..."thats is so redneck". And these stereotypes go on and on.

Frankly, i dont know.
i mean, we dont use it as an insult, really. And no oen i know actually has anything against non-straights, i mean, three of my friends arent straight, but calling something gay never really made sense, i mean, my friend is gay and even he has used it liek that before.
i think it came from when being gay was an insult, but now it's not, but people still use it.
that's all i have to offer

I don't kow why people lately have been saying it so much
I myself am in high school right now and I have some gay/bi/lesbian friends if you think about it it doesnt make sense to say something "is gay" and if it does then why dont they say "it's lesbian" as well?
