I had 4 kids, most of them natural, but the 3rd one was induced because he was my 10-pound baby and labor was progressing slowly. The pitocin changed all that - for the worse! Suddenly the labor wasn't just contractions, it was pains...and they came thick and fast...everything speeded up and became really intense. All the pleasure was gone. After transition, when you have to push, the feeling is wonderful, almost orgasmic, using muscles you didnt know you had! But induction ruined that, and if I had known what it was going to do, I would have refused!
Most of my kids were late, but every one of my OBs said that the baby knows best when it's ready to be born. They all came in their own good time and I for one think it's a huge mistake to interfere with a natural process. It's like trying to yank a green apple off a tree. About the castor oil: An old German woman told me it might work. I checked with my OB and he said, "If the baby is ready, it might start labor. If the baby's not ready, it won't do anything." Me being basically naive, I had no idea what castor oil was for, and if it "wouldn't do anything," I took a tablespoon. Ack! Awful stuff! I waited an hour...nothing...I thought maybe a tablespoon wasn't enough, so I took another (in a glass of orange juice this time). Well, it didn't bring the baby, but it emptied my digestive tract! I spent the rest of the day on the throne!
Bottom line: There is no such thing as a baby being "late." Your labor will be far easier when the baby is fully ready. Be patient and don't allow the doctor to rush you. Stand your ground! Wait for nature to take its course. Your baby will thank you!

I've been told black cohosh might work. (One of my friends is a an herbal nutritionist). Nipple stimulation may work as well.
May I suggest, however, that before you are induced, especially "medically", you ask the doctor to do a BPP on the baby?...if the placenta is still healthy and oxygen blood flow is still good, you don't need to be induced yet. The average length of a first pregnancy is 41 weeks anyway. A baby isn't even overdue until 42 weeks, and that is assuming your date of conception is correct. My daughter came at 41 weeks 1 day, even though the OB/GYN wanted to induce me at 39 weeks (I was dilating early - I was already at 4cm at that point). Unless the placenta has deteriorated, there really isn't a reason to induce. Additionally, if you have a longer than normal menstrual cycle and/or were "late" yourself when you were born, you will tend to have a longer gestational period than "average".
I'd also ask for your bishop's score. If you don't have a high bishop's score, an induction is unlikely to be successful and you have a much higher chance of having complications and a c-section/ Even if successful, induced labors are normally more painful and freuently longer than a natural labor. There is also the risk putting the baby in jeopardy. There is a higher incidence of fetal distress due to decreased oxygen with induced labors, as well as the possibility of the baby not being "in position". Finally, the doctor would be taking the baby out before s/he is ready to be born, which, of course, isn't very good either..
Good luck, and I hope you have a quick labor! :-)

When i was overue, i did everything your doing. Nothing seemed to work. I ended up going into labour the day before my scheduled induction.
Hang in there, once your in labour you may wish you weren't!
Just don't do the castor oil thing, the theory is that it gives you an upset tummy which might get things moving. I don't know about you but at 41 weeks pregnant, the last thing I wanted was the runs!

I had the same experience twice. Nothing works just stay relaxed take long showers and pamper yourself. It is your last chance to do that for awhile. And make sure the baby is moving. Try and keep track how many times you feel the baby kick. GOOD LUCK. I hope you have a healthy and happy baby.

I have heard of eating pinapples to help soften the cervix, do squats and exercises. I personally wouldnt do the caster oil either, because I have heard people say yeah it worked for them but I have a ton of people tell me all it did for them was make them miserable.

I have three children. Each one was induced. It's really quite convenient. You go to the hospital while you are feeling fine. That is, not in labor. The doctor starts your labor and you have the baby. Don't worry. I did fine and you will too.
