Great one. I know many ppl who would take this pill in a heartbeat---despite any drawbacks. They wouldn't care of any consequences. The advantages of such a pill would be the obvious of having more time in the day and night to do the things that people do. Drawbacks could be more stress from doing more! Ppl are stressed as it is---so much striving n lack of good food n exercise. Everyone is moving so fast these days and to be up more hours of the day to be more stressed, i think it would take it's toll on the body.
Me, I wouldn't take such a pill. I wouldn't mind taking a pill that made it seem I was sleeping 12 hours instead of my usual 7-8hours! Naw, I value my sleep-time, and, as you know, I value my dreams. I can't imagine not dreaming again. I love my dreams and there are many insights to be gained from them. Thought-provoking question:)))

The question is ambiguous:
What do you mean by "allow a person to function?"
People ALREADY can function with one hour of sleep per night, but they crazy eventually. If you mean that the pill will stop people from going crazy and let them lead a normal life while having only 1 hour of sleep -- then hell YES I would take it.
Otherwise -- NO.

Advantages: a longer day, which would allow more time for productivity...more time awake means not missing anything that goes around
Disadvantages: missing the comfort of the bed :P
and YES, I would take such a pill becuase I've missed so many things in my life by being asleep, and it would give me more time to do everything that I dont have time to do

Interesting question. I would not take it as I believe in the restorative effects of sleep and the underlying relevance and necessity of dreaming. This world is fast paced enough and does not need us to become any more 24/7 than we already are. That said, if it did exist wouldn't we need MORE than 1 hour sleep in order to keep up with the subsequent increase in working hours and general activity?

It would be impossible for me to comprehend living without night dreams. They're an integral part of my life. Mostly surreal, filled with messages about what I'm REALLY feeling inside, exciting places I've never been, colourful & fantastic. Some families/cultures share their dreams every morning. Tapping this very profound & fun dimension of yourself isn't (to me) worth the extra hours--even though I could dearly use some! Different strokes, & all that.

Many people would find it a strong temptation. Knowing our society it would become a very poplular. Then the harmful effect would be known and certain states would ban it and others endorse it. A new political issue would be born!
As for me....no I wouldn't sounds too risky and I like dreaming!

Function or function healthily. If was fully healthy while taking this pill AND if it didn't shorten lifespan proportionally then I'd take it. I don't remember my dreams anyway.

No, because if you are deprived of REM sleep (dreaming) and sleep in general you will go insane.
Bad pill.
