I spent all my time in a Pentecostal Church in Missouri, so I can't for the life of me remember church services that involved protocol or other strict, rigid observances. Our pastor was a Holy Ghost filled wild man from Alabama, preaching God's word with a passion and fervor that got even the most lackadaisical member of the congregation "fired up." We were exposed to the Word of God and gathered together twice on Sunday and once on Wednesday for fellowship and the opportunity to learn. There were men's groups that encouraged each other to strive to be better men and Christians, and women's groups that...well...did whatever they do in women's groups, (I was never there)... :) There were times during praise and worship when the presence of God the Holy Spirit was so thick you felt you could cut it with a knife... The times were simple, passionate and exciting, and I was even a minister within that denomination for a brief time. Eventually I left the movement, there were just too many claims I had trouble with, (not to mention the blind support of such men as Benny Hinn and Kenneth Hagin), and found a home in a contemporary Methodist Church... So all in all I can't ever remember any time where a church service was "sterile" or otherwise boring, (except those times when I attended a Catholic Mass in deference to a family event such as an infant baptism)...
