I don't understand it,but I think it's cute.

This is the traditional way of the English language. It is only different in America. When Noah Webster was writing his first American dictionary, he decided to change some words to make them easier to spell, like color/colour, plough/plow, and some other ones.

It is not only the UK that uses the letter 'u' in many words.

Current British English spellings follow, for the most part, those of Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language (1755). Many of the now characteristic American English spellings were introduced, although often not created, by Noah Webster (An American Dictionary of the English Language (1828).

Because in the UK they spell the English language the proper way. In the USA they've changed a lot of the real words and made them easier. :-)

Because in Old English, the letter u was considered good luck.

that is the proper way to spell those words, they've been Americanized by taking the u out

We do that in Canada too. Theatre, Centre, colour, pototoe, tomatoe
