Add the x's together, then divide by 2
5 + 8 = 13
13/2 = 6.5
Add the y's together, then divide by 2
6 + 2 = 8

add x's and divide by 2 to find the x coordinate of the midpoint
add y's and divide by 2 to get the y coordinate of the midpoint

x=[5+8]/2=13/2=6.5
y=[6+2]/2=8/2=4

The mid-point formula for a diagonal is:

X(1)+X(2)/2 , Y(1)+Y(2)/2 therefore...

5+8/2 , 6+2/2 = 13/2 , 8/2
= (6.5,4)

Take the average of the x terms and that is the x point.

Take the average of the y terms and that is the y point.

P(M) (6.5, 4)

The first answer in this forum has a great simple description but has wrong answer. But if you follow the formulas you cant go wrong.
