Dialect

Dialect = 1) the sum total of local characteristics of speech; 2) any form of speech that differs from a real or imaginary standard speech; 3) the form of a spoken language peculiar to a region, community, social group, occupational group, etc.; 4) any language as a member of a group or family of languages (example: English is a West German dialect).

(From Webster's New World Dictionary, 2nd Concise Edition.)

That being said, could we not also use the term "colloquialisms" to describe "different forms of the same language"?

From "colloquial," which means: 1) having to do with or like conversation; 2) designating or of the words, phrases, and idioms characteristic of informal speech and writing; informal.
Note: The label [Colloq.] is used throughout this dictionary in this (informal) sense, and does not indicate substandard or illiterate usage.

(From the same dictionary.)

Just a thought...hmmm?

dialects or regional dialects.
Another word which refers to local dialects is
