When it is slow in starting up, you have to many things being loaded at start up.. go to run, type in msconfig, go to the start up tab and eliminate some of the items by unchecking the box.. try to eliminate programs you don't need.. You can always go back in and re check the boxes if you find that you needed some things that you don't have available on startup..
.
If all else fails, add RAM...

I wonder if you've got a lot of programs installed that have their presence in the start menu.
Assuming that you have Windows XP, please go to "Start", then Settings and Control Panel. In this Window, look to your left where you'll two boxes, where the lower box has the caption "Troubleshooting" and a line below that with a blue circle with a question mark in it saying Start up and shut down. Please click on it. Choose the option and click next. Windows will help sort out the issue.
If you remember a date when you didn't have this problem, before, then a "System Restore" option [which is there in the same Performance and Maintenance window, to the left, above Troubleshooting] would be better. You could just click on that and roll back the settings of the computer to the last known point of optimal performance.
Hope this helps.
All the best.
Cheers

Look at all the applications that are started at boot time, and decide which ones you don't really need to start then. On a PC, run "msconfig" to show what starts at boot time, then uncheck the things you don't need.
