you have to buy it. you can get it at a office supply store ( ex: Circut City, Best Buy, Staples ), but i think that you can buy and download it off the internet, but i dont usually trust that, so its your choice. hopefully your daughter isnt too annoyed, because unless you can get word and then install it tonight then you cant do anything. sorry! a lot of people use other programs, but i dont like to, just becasue i am familit with Microsoft word and i trust it. usually there is a "notepad" in your start-program folder, so your daughter might want to use that for now, later she can copy and paste it into mircosoft word. Also a lot of other computers use Mircosoft word, so i would buy that just incase you need to transport it to a different computer. just make sure that you have the right kind of computer ( Mac, or PC ) for Microsoft Word ( or Microsoft Office, which has everything) it should say on the back of the book it comes in.
hope this anwsers your question and that this helps

You can buy Microsoft Office which includes Word.
If the computer is running Windows, WordPad should be included in the Accessories. It is Word but with fewer features.
You can download Linux for free. It has a word processing program included and it does the same thing as Word.

MS Office student/teacher addition is about $180 and available at places like Circuit City and other major computer/retail stores.
If you don't have the $$$ for MS Office, there's always OpenOffice 2.0. It's 100% free with an alternative to MS Word, excel, powerpoint. You can even save or open documents as MS Word format too!

You will only be able to access Microsoft Office (which includes Microsoft Word) if it has been installed on your computer.
However, there is an open source project where you can download Open Office - which includes a word processing program (like Word), a presentation program (like PowerPoint), and a spreadsheet (like Excel).
The link for Open Office is

You go to a computer store and buy a copy , download it to your computer(make sure you put in the key code correct). Or you could go to openspace office and down load that free and there are books in the library that tell you how to use it.
This office has the same things as word.

Your daughter shouldn't be annoyed, rather she should be pleased she has a new PC. Do as the others have said and download openoffice, it's free. If she HAS to have Mico$oft, you can get Office Standard 2003 Student Edition for $125.63 shipped from this link.

does she have a copy of it? if not try installing some program like limewire, and download it from the net, but be sure to check it for virusses and stuff! If the copy she has doesn't load on the pc, make sure the serial key is correct!
freeoffice.org is a very good free alternative for microsoft office!

[[Spreading the gospel of free software all across the land, Peter at your service...]]
Don't buy and install Word, download this http://www.openoffice.org it is free (*FREEE*) and does everything that Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access) can do. Here's a book about it:
http://www.amazon.com/OpenOffice-org-Dummies-Gurdy-Leete/dp/0764542222/sr=1-1/qid=1160609760/ref=sr_1_1/102-5750505-5084909?ie=UTF8&s=books
I can't find the book on Amazon that I own, it's called "I Hate Microsoft" or something like that or "Don't Use Microsoft.."
Best wishes to ya.

Unfortunately, if you didn't recieve a trial with the computer itself, then you have to buy the software. Openoffice is a free alternative which you can download from openoffice.org if choose not to buy microsoft word.
