Because we need goods and services, and also something to pay for goods and services, its just one big circle of need and provision!

Also being unemployed is dull, and if no one worked then even if you were unemployed you couldnt sit and watch TV or anything because there would be no one employed to make the TV of make the programmes/movies etc on it

In a broad sense...

It occupies people and gives them something to pass their time.

It enables them to be self-sufficient (as much as anyone can be these days), and provide for their family / relatives etc.

It motivates peoples and gives them a sense of purpose in life.

It fosters skills and abilities and can help bolster people's confidence and self-efficacy.

I guess it helps the economy and all of that boring finacial stuff too... but I know about psychology, not economics!

if someone doesn't work who's going to grow the potatoes and catch the fish for you fish and chips or prepare the meat for your steak, or rear the chickens for eggs I could go on and on. that's why working is important to society

It isn't. Work is really just a means to keep the masses and the asses busy. While reality slips away from them ever some further.

Because if nobody worked then you wouldn't be very happy. You'd have to build your own house, make your own car, hunt for your food, sew your own clothes etc etc. You get my point?
