First I would try and contact my friend in an other way than mail, like calling your friend over the phone. In case the mail address is right there are some possibilities why the mail came back.
* your provider might be having server troubles
* your provider might be testing anti-spam messages ...
The latter was the case with my provider: I read a story about a businessman sending an email to a client who never got it, because it was accidentally considered spam by the provider's spam guard.

if the username is correct - ask the helpdesk of yahoo.
also try by yahoo massenger to add him to your contact.
if the address is not correct - or other reason - you will get it.
anf if you will not succeed - and he is your friend, try to call and ask him...
try also other IM like icq etc.
