It can be a stroke of luck when it comes to buying new cars. Even Japanese cars has lemons.
On the average, the initial quality of the Japanese cars are better than the American and European.
How long does the car last and how many problems you may faces depends significantly on how you drive also.
Consumer reports can help you in finding more information on them.
Also, you can find problems and more reliability data on the auto.msn.com

The majority of cars made today are very reliable. Japanese cars have a good reputation. American cars? Look around, you will see hundreds of American cars still on the road after 20 or more years.

i own a repair shop, and i have all kinds of them here in the shop,American and foreign and its true that some of the Japanese cars are really good as far as repairs go but the majority of the ones i get are Japanese cars because people don't take real good care of them, they think they,ll last forever, and that's not so,all cars including German made do give a lot of trouble,if not taken care of,i wouldn't pay to much attention to what people say when you bring it up in a conversation,,most people just like to argue about it anyway, all cars have trouble, and all eventually get repaired, good luck i hope this help,s.

The main determining factor for reliability is how you drive a car and if you take care of it mechanically. 20 years ago Japan made better cars on the low price end. Lincolns and Caddys were great. German cars? Whatever. Volvo is the best. Jeep sucks. Very expensive and costly to maintain. You couldn't give me one.

C'mon out of your trance mate, and try doing some research for facts. Go to ConsumersReports.org and get their auto ratings for new & used cars. It is broken down by each major system in the car. They also have a recommended list for used cars, and an avoid list so you don't get ripped off.
