The easiest way for me to tell the difference is by looking at their vent, where the poo comes out. Females usually have outies and males will usually have innies. Another way is when they are ready to breed, the males will have breeding tubercles on their gill plates and the front ray of their pectoral fins.

Here's a site with some pics to help, http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/sexing-fs.htm

with goldfish you really can't tell people will say size or color but that's like saying if a person is bigger the person is a man or if the person has long hair the person is a woman. In goldfish the only way to be for sure is chemical testing or if you see one giving birth.

It is hard to tell but on a gold fish you must look at the dorsil fin (top fin) If it appears to be growing or it is longer than the others it is a male. The male fish are usually prettier than the females.

i know this sounds gross and may be quite a task to accomplish but to determine the sex of a goldfish, you would have to check its anal opening. Here is a link that describes what to look for and there are pictures as examples.
