I am a teacher at a low income school that is in the process of incorporating Professional Learning Communities. What we have discovered is that as a whole, our student body is not really motivated to learn. Comments are consistently made stating, "We are from .... "We can't do that or learn that. " How do we motivate them without using physical rewards?

i think competiton is an invaluable tool to motivate students, especially if they are recognised appropiately.

Try incorporating games. Often competition and being able to say "I won" does a lot towards motivating learning.

You could try a top of the class board where the three highest scoring students get their work pinned to the board with a star sticker or something. This worked on us in middle school. It was great seeing your work on the board even if it was only once in the entire school year.

Or with smaller children maybe the top three could lead the line that with everyone else behind them in no particular order.

We all get rewards. In Middle class Children learn early at home that knowledge is power. In very poor society parents to not convey this to the young. They do not know why is it good to learn- not only because they could get a better job but because it will improve their quality of life. As a teacher it is your responsibility to do it. If you are lucky the society will hand you helping hand.

make it a challenge! have them pick a topic, and teach what they know.....give them a little power in the classroom!...have an assignment that each student must teach a class for a certain amount of time, have them do the reaserch on the topic,and teach the class including the teacher. kids seem to love to play teacher,so make it work for them...they will have fun while learning!

You have to provide them with other kind of rewards:
-The reward of knowing something new.
-The promisse of a better future if they study.
-or just the reward of learning an interesting history, like if they were watching the TV.
