Also what are the leading symbols? This story seeems to be minimal in all areas. I only find Characters, tone, style (dialogue,allusion, dialect and discriptive style). Please help....

The irony is that the young waiter, who does.not understand the importance of "a clean, well lighted place" to the old man, is going home to "a clean, well lighted place". The old waiter, who does understand, like the old man, has no "clean, well lighted place" to go.
EH was a writer long on character, short on words, sparse of plot, and sparing with symbols. The contrast of light and dark is everywhere in this work, however...contrast bars with cafes, lit with unlit.
