we have lived together as domestic partners for 11+ years; 6 years in California and 5 years in Washinton state. Does this qualify for common law marriage?

Each state has its own laws. It would depend on the state you currently live in.

It depends on the state that you live in. Some states allow you to have a common law marriage after publicly stating that you are married and some states have time restraints. Certain states do not recognize common law marriages what-so-ever. I would call your local court house and ask them what the regulations in your area are.

No. Both California and Washington do not have common law marriages. There are only a few states (mostly southern) that have common law marriage. There are certain requirments to common law; lenght of living together, referring to eathother as husband and wife...etc. but it doesn't apply in your case . Hope this helps.

For those who answered that you are and that it's seven years, I urge you to recheck the year that you're living in...remember it's 2006..also look where he said he lived WA and CA. No common law statutes..ever...so you are absolutely not common law..don't believe me...look it up on line just google common law.

No, almost all common law marriage laws have been stopped. And the law is a STATE law so it will vary from state to state. But I don't know of any that still do that.

With so many couples choosing to live together instead of getting married, many states no longer recognize the concept of a "common-law" union. You will need to look on line to see if that state has one or not.

NO... Unfortunately the common law marriage is no longer in effect. I also live in Californina and was with my husband fourteen years before getting married..... Some issues came up and I contacted a lawyer and was advised that the law no longer applies. Basically without papers you mean nothing....

you must claim your partners name and use it. Others must know about it and you must call each other husband and such. if you didnt do that then its not common law. Beside stop being such a sh*t and get a marriage licencse at the justice of the peace. If you dont want a ceremony just tell him that.

---law is 6mths of living together in Texas if you claim one as spouse.
