Actually, all of the answers so far are missing one important point.

What a "four alarm" fire means is often a local thing!

In cities, it may mean the number of stations or battalions involved. In rural areas, it could mean the number of responding units or mutual aid requests that went out.

Although one thing almost always holds true, as someone else mentioned, "four alarm" means more people responded than a "three alarm."

It's best to check with your local fire department to see what it means in your area if you really want to know.

Dont listen to the guy who posted above. Not only did he try making fun of you he is wrong.
The amount of alarms does bring extra help. When a fire is a 4 alarm fire it means they had to call in help from 3 additional stations. Each alarm refers to another station that help was required. Each station may send mulitple trucks though.

When the first engine company arrives and there's not enough, they call the next-closest engine to come help ... 2 engines = 2 alarm fire.

When the second engine company comes and that's still not enough, they call the next closest engine ... 3 engines = 3 alarm fire.

When the third engine company arrives and that's still not enough, they call the next closest engine ... 4 engines = 4 alarm fire.

So basically, it's all in how many engine companies are required.

Are you really that STUPID? Or just KIDDING! WELL let me tell you when a Fire is called in the first unit arrives, if it is too much for them to handle a second alarm is called to provide more man power to get it under control. If not it goes to a third alarm, then a fourth, and so on until they all can get it under control
