Not this time, this is to do with Americas war against communism, the war you were fighting when funding international terrorism. Now of course, you are fighting the war on terrorism, because your own country actually experienced what they have been funding everywhere else.
The old Soviet Union wanted to invade Afghanistan, and a young Saudi gentleman from a wealthy family realised this would lead to oppression and the banning of their religion (religion is the opiate of the people - Karl Marx) for the Afghanis. He raised a small number of supporters in North Saudi and set off to help protect his Islamic brothers in Afghanistan. The CIA helped fund this guerrilla warfare (as it's called when aimed at proUSA people, terrorism when at AntiUSA), and helped train these people and the Afghanis who joined them. For ten years the Mujhaddin (as they were known) fought day and night with the big bad communists, living life with great hardship, in the mountainous terrain. After 10 years, having suffered great losses and humiliation (the kind the US experienced in Vietnam), the USSR withdrew, having failled to secure the country. The CIA had promised the Mujhaddin financial aid to help rebuild Afghanistan if the Mujhaddin were successful, but then turned their backs on the war ravaged people of Afghanistan, because Gorbachev was in power in Moscow, and glasnost was under way. Drugs baron warlords seized power in different areas of Afghanistan, until the Mujhaddin again took up arms and with the popular support of the ordinary Afghanis fought and toppled the Drug Barons. They set up a political wing, called the Taleban, and never forgave the US for selling them down the river. As for that great young freedom fighter from Saudi, well his name was Osama Bin Laden.
Sadly, the US seems to think they will conquer Afghanistan, even though the Russians failled, and the Taleban had outlawed opium growing. Now under US/NATO control opium has again become the major export of Afghanistan, and the US government and CIA are dealling with the drug baron warlords who are in power outside of Kabul.
