2 types of crawl spaces and can be anywhere from 2' to 7' deep. Unconditioned and Conditioned. Unconditioned CSpaces are the parts of home most occupants avoid ever entering after a few years. Conditioned space has a protective envelope on the ground, walls and floor joists, meaning heat (if you live in the freeze zones of N America) floor and walls installed with 6ml poly, fiberglass insulation, crushed stone and poly or poly under poured concrete skim coat on floor. Cross ventilation ports open in summer/humid weather. Closed for the winter. Water infiltration should be handled by a sump pump. Do not store any natural fiber in this space, you'll have no mold. Conditioned spaces become interior space except with an exterior entrance. They're a pleasure to enter, you might turn it into a clubhouse and bring your friends down to watch football.

Actually, a de-humidifier will probably help a lot. That musty smell is probably from negative pressure between your crawlspace and the soil outside - this is so common. Purchase a good one and connect it directly to the floor drain once the smell goes. Before that, while it's new, continually empty it by hand. this is in case your drain has been underused for years and may not do well with a large amount of water and so avoiding a messy puddle.
If your only drain is in the full half of your basement, run a hose to your drain. The dehumidifier is a more permanent solution than a spray.

Crawl space ? Not good, I would think only an ozone tenting ( they tent the place like they do for bug treatment and gas it with ozone ) would cure the problem. Only killing the mold will get rid of the smell.

the reason why your crawl smells like this is lack of ventilation. you need to install crawlvents in the crawspace to get rid of the smell. all the other remodies will just cover up the smell
