Before the 80's it was:

"Your son is severly retarded. It is probably the mother's fault. It is best for everyone if we put him an institution right away."

some of the treatments in institutions which was where most people with autism ended up (im talking as little as 50 years ago) included electric shoch treatment and cage suspension which involves someone being put into a cage that is suspended from the celing and leaving them there for some time. there was also a drug which was frequently used i cant recall the name but it had to be given from a glass syringe because it was so potent that it would have melted anything else! on older patients now in care homes you can sometimes see a dimple above the buttox where this was adminestered and caused the skin to disolve. in the 1990's we were breaking out into repetitive training and similar things like using pictures to comunicate there were also lots of other 'treatments' which were thought to cure autism.

Applied Behaviral Annalyisis (ABA) was and is still the primary treatment. Ivar Lovaas's studies came out in the 70's...FYI.
