It ran fine for a couple of days and I got up this morning to go to work but it would not turn over. It gave a hissing sound when turned the key to start it up. The lights, radio, etc. work fine. What could the problem be?

i own a repair shop, and changing the starter might have helped it for a while, but it may need a new flywheel, from what you have said,,it just made a whining sound but didn't engage in to the fly wheel on it,,i see it here at the shop, all the time,,if you get a chance pull the starter off it and spin the motor around by using the main crank blot in the front of the engine, and look and see if the flywheel look good on it,,good luck,i hope this help,s.,,PS if your starter is not even trying to turn over re-check all of the connections on it,good luck.

The ring gear on the fly wheel may have worn spots on it. If it does the sound again. take a large ratchet and socket on the crank shaft pulley and turn the engine over by hand.About 1/4 turn and try starting it. if it doesn't go another 1/4 turn and try it. If it starts then it's the ring gear. They can be replaced and installed on your old flywheel or you can just get a whole new flywheel installed.
Or the starter may be bad and the bendix inside the starter is not extending to reach the flywheel ring gear

Sounds like a loose cable. Check all the connections at the battery and the starter. Also check the ground cable from the battery to the block.

a "hissing sound"

a bad vacuum line maybe. possibly the one to your fuel pressure regulator. if that's not working correctly you won't have enough fuel pressure to the injectors to start the car.

unless the hissing is coming from your fuel system

do you smell any gas? does it hiss when you're cranking? or does it hiss when you turn the car, turn the key like you want to listen to the radio but not far enough to engage the starter.

turning th key just half way engages the fuel pump

Probably bad battery cables. They will corrode down inside the cable covering where it won't be visible.
