It really depends on what you are looking for.

My first suggestion is "Usagi Yojimbo" published by Dark Horse Comics. It is a anamorphic comic (animal like characters) set during the Shogunate period in Japanese history. The creator, Stan Sakai, blends history and Japanese myths to create adventures for his hero.

If you are looking for something more realistic and modern, I strongly recommend "Jon Sable, Freelance" which is being re-printed by Devil's Due. Originally published in the 1980's, The story is adventures of Jon Sable, former Olympic athlete, now a mercenary and a children's author. The creator, Mike Grell's artwork is beautiful and his story-telling is masterful. Look for the first volume of reprints (issues 1-6) for one of the best origin stories ever published.

Superhero comics is a tougher field to pick from. A few recommendations in this area are "Birds Of Prey", "JSA Classified", "the Fantastic Four" and "Iron Man." Iron Man is going to become a movie very soon and you might want to get a feel for the character before the release.

"Top 10" published by ABC (America's Best Comics) is an exceptional work. Imagine a world where everybody has superpowers. Now imagine the police department for such a world. "Top 10" is part "Justice League of America" and part "Hill Street Bues." The original series only ran few issues and is now collected into two graphic novels.
