Do you actually know any soldiers working in Iraq? I have a friend who was there and he said they are doing a lot of good there, but the media never talks about it. It is a horrible situation, to be sure.

That's not the issue at hand.
We never went to Iraq for terrorist reasons (even though Bush used his momentum unfairly to gain the right to invade Iraq. I'm a republican, but not pro-Bush). We went there because the US and UN applied sanctions against Iraq to let us search their facilities for nuclear weapons. Iraq refused. We threatened force. Iraq still refused. We invaded.
I know... It's horrible and i don't agree with it.
BUT...
We are making progress as far as getting the new government on it's feet and making them self supporting. Their military is getting close to standing on their own.
If you feel bad about the Iraqis killed, just think. We've killed about 50,000 iraqis. Bad, right? BUT Hussain killed 6 million of his own people.
As for the americans... It really is a crying shame and i really do regret it.

I can't say much for republicans claiming we are doing good in Iraq. I would imagine it is being said to rally the hopes of a seriously divided nation. And there is always the remote possibility that it is true. We, of course, are not privy to all the facts.
But I do agree. I think we are breeding quite a bit of hatred towards America. I'm not sure that the US is to blame, but there does seem to be a large anti-America sentiment out there these days.

What is a necessary death? We don't create terrorists, Islamic fascists like the Wahhabi sect create them. Saddam created them with his bounty for families of suicide bombers. You never read the 14 UN resolutions that Saddam defied, did you? I don't hear you decrying the million or so interred in mass graves near Abu Ghraib!
I don't hear you decrying schools and hospitals stockpiled with weapons instead of school and healing supplies.
bin Laden is hiding in northern Pakistan, and we have agreed not to invade that country.

Republicans have a fair story to tell about what they've accomplished over the last two years, but their narrative has been interrupted by the trashy subplot of Mark Foley and his trolling for male House pages.
Democrats are constantly changing their narrative when it fails to match reality. The reason Democrats don't talk about the deficit like they used to is because it has dropped from the $423 billion predicted by President Bush, as recently as last February, to $250 billion, according to projections by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The CBO says the reason for the decline is better than expected tax receipts, especially from corporate profits. There are more tax receipts because individuals and corporations are being taxed at lower rates, giving them increased incentive to earn bigger profits. Bigger profits produce more tax revenue.
Gasoline prices are down sharply from just a few months ago; the Dow Jones Industrials set a new record high last week. The unemployment rate now stands at 4.6 percent -- down from 6.3 percent in 2003, lower than the average of the 1970s, 1980s, or the 1990s, and equivalent to the unemployment rate in September 1998. Since August 2003, the economy has created 6.6 million new jobs.
What Republicans did not do is conduct a crusade against new spending, as well as waste, fraud and abuse. Instead, too many of them joined the Democrats at the spending trough, setting earmark records. If Democrats win a congressional majority in next month's election, they would increase spending and raise taxes. This would slow and possibly halt the economic expansion.
The Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act is a fine accomplishment. It will create an earmark database that the public can easily access on the Internet. The bill passed largely because of the bipartisan leadership of senators Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Barack Obama (D-Ill).
The problem for Republicans is that they seem to have run out of ideas. They now ask for votes on two levels, neither of which is appealing. The first is that the Democrats would do a worse job than Republicans, which is like choosing which of two ugly sisters to take on a date. The second is they crave power for its own sake. Republicans have failed to give voters sufficient reason to vote for them, except for one that trumps all the rest -- they can better defend the country.
Democrats have no plan for keeping America safe, or winning the war against the fanatics. They have opposed most of the Bush administration's domestic surveillance methods. They have opposed aggressive interrogation tactics designed to get information to protect us, including opposition to the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where detainees are treated better than they could expect if they were detained in their homelands.
This election isn't about House pages; it's about survival. In his new book, ``America Alone: The End of the World As We Know It,'' columnist Mark Steyn states this irrefutable fact about the importance of winning in Iraq: ``Being seen not to run -- or, if you prefer, being seen to show 'resolve' -- should be the indispensable objective of U.S. foreign policy. Were these colors to run from Iraq, it would be the end of the American era -- for why would Russia, China, or even Belgium ever again take seriously a superpower that runs screaming for home at the first pinprick.''
For all of their promises to do a better job of fighting this war, Democrats have no plan, other than retreat. That is the plan the terrorists have for us. Retreat is not in their playbook. The terrorists in Iraq and elsewhere don't speak of timetables for withdrawal or bringing their fighters home in time for Ramadan. They're in it for the long haul. They believe we are not. A victory by Democrats next month will validate their view and encourage them to fight harder.
Republicans have been far from perfect in this war. They have barely approached mediocrity in their handling of domestic issues. But to change horses and leaders mid-war is a prescription for a longer engagement, because this is a confrontation that will end only in victory or defeat for one side or the other. That's why the Republicans need to keep their majority and conservatives need to keep the pressure on them to get back to the original GOP principles that brought them that majority. That's a better strategy than Republicans acting like Democrat-lite.

The stuff you don't hear about? Let's start with Electrical Power
production
in Iraq. The day after the war was declared over, there was nearly 0
power
being generated in Iraq. 45 days later, in a partnership between the
Army,
the Iraqi people and some private companies, there are now 3200 mega
watts (Mw) of power being produced daily, 1/3 of the total national
potential
of 8000 Mw. Downed power lines (big stuff, 400 Kilovolt (Kv) and 132 Kv)
are being repaired and are about 70% complete.
Then there is water purification. In central Iraq between Baghdad and
Mosul, home of the 4th Infantry Division, Water treatment was spotty at
best.
The facilities existed, but the controls were never implemented. Simple
chemicals like Chlorine for purification and Alum (Aluminum Sulfate) for
sediment settling (The Tigris River is about as clear as the Mississippi
River)
were in short supply or not used at all and when chlorine was used, it
was
metered by the scientific method of guessing. So some people got pool
water and some people got water with lots of little things moving in it.
We are slowly but surely solving that. Contracts for repairs to
facilities that
are only 50% or less operational are being let, chemicals are being
delivered, although we don't have the metering problem solved yet (It's
only
been 45 days).
How about oil and fuel? Well the war was all about oil wasn't it? You
bet it
was. It was all about oil for the Iraqi people because they have no
other
income, they produce nothing else. Oil is 95% of the Iraqi GNP. For this
nation to survive, it MUST sell oil. The Refinery at Bayji is at
75% of capacity producing gasoline. The crude pipeline between Kirkuk
(Oil Central) and Bayji will be repaired by tomorrow (2 June). LPG, what
all
Iraqi's use to cook and heat with, is at 103% of normal production and
WE,
the US ARMY, at least 4th ID, are insuring it is being distributed
FAIRLY to
ALL Iraqi's.
You have to remember that 3 months ago, ALL these things were used as
weapons against the population to keep them in line. If your town
misbehaved, gasoline shipments stopped, LPG pipelines and trucks
stopped, Water was turned off, power was turned off.
Now, until exports start, every drop of gasoline produced goes to the
Iraqi
people, crude oil is being stored, the country is at 75% capacity now,
they
need to export or stop pumping soon, thank the UN for the delay. ALL LPG
goes to the Iraqi people EVERYWHERE. Water is being purified as best
they can, but at least it's running all the time to everyone.
Are we still getting shot at? Yep Are American Soldiers still dying?
Yep,
about 1 a day from the 4th ID, most in accidents, but dead is dead.
If we are doing all this for the Iraqi's, why are they shooting at us?
The general population isn't. There are still bad guys, who won't let go
of
the old regime. They are Ba'ath party members (Read Nazi Party, but not
as nice) who know nothing but the regime. They were thugs for the regime
that caused many to disappear in the night and they have no other
skills. At
least the Nazis had jobs they could go back to after the war as
plumbers,
managers, engineers, etc...these people have no skills but terror. They
are
simply applying their skills....and we are applying ours.
There is no Christian way to say they must be eliminated and we are
doing
so with all the efficiency we can muster. Our troops are shot at
literally
everyday by small arms and RPGs. We respond and 100% of the time, the
Ba'ath party guys come out with the short end of the stick. The most
amazing thing to me is that they don't realize that if they stopped
shooting
at us, we would focus on fixing things and leave. The more they shoot at
us, the longer we will stay.
Lastly, Realize that 90% the damage you see on TV was caused by
IRAQI's, NOT the war. Sure we took out a few bridges from military
necessity, we took out a few power and phone lines to disrupt
communications, sure we drilled a few palaces and government
headquarters buildings with 2000lb laser guided bombs (I work 100 yards
from where two hit the Tikrit Palace), he had plenty to spare. But, ANY
damage you see to schools, hospitals, power generation facilities,
refineries, pipelines, was ALL caused either by the Iraqi Army in its
death
throws or the Iraqi civilians looting the places. Could the army have
prevented it? Nope. We can and do now, but 45 days ago the average
soldier was lucky to know what town he was in much less be informed
enough to know who owned what or have the power to stop a
1,000 people from looting a building by himself.
The United States and Britian are doing a very noble thing here. We
stuck
our necks out on the world chopping block to free a people. I've already
talked the weapons of mass destruction thing to death, bottom line, who
cares, this country was one big conventional weapons ammo dump
anyway.
We have probably destroyed more weapons and ammo in the last 30 days
than the US Army has ever fired in the last 30 years (Remember, this is
a
country the size of Texas), so drop the WMD argument as the reason we
came here, if we find it GREAT, if we don't, SO WHAT?

Freedom isn't free is merely a code to them to say that getting their politician means paying the price of ignoring reality.
