Next time start by going to home depot and buying the same snake that a plumber uses for about twenty bucks. That much gets you a pretty classy one that should be able to pull out almost anything with its hook on the end.
If you want the ultimate in snakes (short of becoming the motorized Roto-Rooter man) then get the one where the snake can be coiled up again into its own little bucket by twisting the handle backwards. That is another ten bucks or so more.

Next time, be care-full of what goes done the drain, there is the snake you can purchase at the hardware store > there are two kinds a solid type & a spring type, less than $25.00, also easy to use; another type of drain unclogger is an attachment to the garden hose about $15.00, what happens here is you push this rubber down the drain then the pressue builds up until the clog is set free, to explain about 6 inches long, made of rubber, expands with water pressure, must be a two person operation if using this tool

What did he have to do, crawl under the house or up on a ladder? That is far too much for just a clean-out. We paid $50 just last month & gave the guy $60 just for showin' up so quick! It only took him 30 minutes from the time he got out of his truck to the time he put his equipment back into his truck. How long did it take this guy? They should have a "base price". Does he have a liscense? Ask for his lisc.# & call to check up on him. He sounds shady!

I used to use Roto Rooter and they were decent. They usually have to snake pretty far or I would suggest getting a snake of your own for future uses. Sometimes they have to go nearly to the street depending on the city piping.

I am a handyman in cali and i would charge about 100.00 if that.
250 seems a little high
ask him to break it down on an invoice and ask him what he is baising it on.
