While HPV (human paploma virus) is very common, it IS just a virus, it can actually cause cervical cancer. just so you know. but even if it IS HPV, chances are, she will prescribe an antibiotic, and it will clear up. However, if you are unaware, there recently has been added by the FDA, a vaccination for HPV!! It is the closest we have EVER come to actually curing a form of cancer! It is suggested that all women between 11 and 25 get the vaccination, as it prevents HPV! So you might want to look into that, this is a virus that causes cancer, and you owe it to yourself to get protected! Good luck, and i wouldn't worry!

Keep in mind that there are many different kinds of HPV. And if I remember correctly from talking with my doctor about it, there are only three types that are the real three to worry about.

The first two, if I remember correctly mostly cause genetal warts to appear, and the third is the one that can cause cervical cancer.

The others on the other hand will mostly just make your papsmears show up abnormal, and most of the time even go away on their own.

One thing to ask your doctor about, is the new vaccination for HPV that has come out, and insurance should be covering it withing the next few months.

Even if you have only been with one guy, it is totally possable to have gotten HPV if you didn't use a condom, especially if he has been with alot of girls.

If a second opinion would make you feel more at ease, then I would deffinately suggest getting one, but until then, don't consider this papsmear to be a false alarm, because those tests are designed to detect things like HPV.

It does not matter how many guys you have been with. I do not think you need a second opinion. You need to trust that your doctor found some odd looking cells, and act from there! Just because you may have had an abnormal pap smear does not mean you need surgery or are going to get cervical cancer. It just means you have a few out of placed looking cells. Which normally go away on their own in young women. I think you need to talk to you doctor more about it, and face your fears that you had an abnormal pap smear. Jumping around the issue might make it worse.

HPV is very common, but still something that you need to know about. Wait for your test results to come back, and talk with your doctor then. Keep in mind that there are several types, and some are harmless, while others can cause cervical cancer. The test results will tell for sure.

i had HPV and didnt know it. it caused me to have cervical cancer and i had to have a hysterectomy but i am 38 years old too you are only 18 so maybe if you do have HPV yours hasnt gone that far yet. just have regular checkups every year. in some women HPV goes away but some it causes cervical cancer like in my case. keep a check on it ok and hopefully you dont have it.
