It probably doesn't do anything. Today's modern trucks are wind tested to lower their drag to improve fuel economy and stability.

What I think is that it does save gas because it's like driving with the windows down. You're carrying extra drag. But since the cap does weight a bit, you're negating that savings.

it works both ways 1. with a cap the truck is heavier
without the cap the wind hits the inside of the box

regrettably this is an city legend. Tonneau covers enhance drag. in spite of the fact that they do shop prying eyes off the contents of your truck mattress, that's an stunning reason to very own one. generally, air traveling over your truck gets caught by making use of the tailgate, this air will proceed to bypass in the process the mattress, becoming a cushion or pocket of air that air coming over the cab travels over, making the aerodynamics resembling a passenger motor vehicle's shape. including a tonneau conceal eliminates this pocket of air, and the air coming over the cab suitable will drag on the decrease back a million/2 of the conceal, this might harm gas financial equipment.

It saves gas as the wind resistence on the bed of the truck uses more gas. The best is the flat beds (tonno covers I think they are called) as there is not resistance at all.
