I was 16 and at a social club on New year's eve... I didn't know what to ask for and someone suggested Port and Lemon! I was horrified, later , to hear it referred to as a tarts drink !
( if you fancy trying it , don't use your husband's vintage port... grounds for divorce I fear!)

So many answers....It's impossible to choose a best one. I think most of us learned a lesson although some later than others..... Me.....It took about 30 years to stick to red wine with lots of water in between.
A couple of non drinkers answered....that's fine , but If you are going to be sanctimonious MJ..... I'd take the word 'junkie' out of your ID

Cheers folks

The one that stays in my memory is the day I turned 21. I was at my Grandma's cafe, celebrating. She said I was now "legal" and should have a beer. So I did. Miller Lite (Light?). I was just about to take the first sip when the front door opened and Mama walked in and saw me with a beer in my hand!

People said later that the look on my face was one of those "priceless" moments!!!

After I recovered from shock, I did drink the beer, but the novelty of it had been ruined....sigh.

Hahaha.

A half pint of cider in the bar of the Belfast-Liverpool ferry when I was 14.

It made a change from drinking cider from a plastic bottle behind the hedges in the local park with my mates on a Friday night, and it made me feel really grown up because the barman didn't even bat an eyelid when I asked him for the drink.

3 yrs old at a society wedding drinking the grown ups champagne whilst they danced.

Or much later at 15 or 16 in the local rugby club where all the "in" people went, wondering how the hell I ended up there, ordering a gin and bitter lemon cos the girl infront of me did!!

The first drink to do that for me was the first time I had a half-glass of wine before bed for the health benefits.

I mostly drink low-alcohol beer now. Beer has a lot of the same benefits as wine. L-a beer has them too, plus it will lower your risk of thrombosis while regular beer raises it.

Before all that, it was not drinking that made me feel that way. Other than at bed time it still does.

Not moral. Just smart.

No
I'm 50 and have yet to have an alcoholic drink that made me feel grown up.
Brown Ale at age 12 put me off beer for life and Whiskey burns my throat and makes me behave like a prat, so I stick to Coke or Virgin cola. "I am into coke and also enjoy the occasional Virgin is a statement which could be misconstrues.

Black Velvet - 50/50 mix of Guinness and sweet cider. I was 15 and drank a full pint of it to no immediate ill effect, though I did get a stonking hangover the next day!

I was 14 when we talked a friend into borrowing a bottle of vodka from his mothers liquor cabinet. Didnt make me feel grown up really. Unless you consider cartwheels and barfing in the park somehow sophisticated.

Boones Farm. The next day when I was puking my guts out, I felt grown-up. I waited a while to try sophistication.
