Goldfish are carp, and under the right circumstances and conditions can live a really long time. I worked at a fish store and heard people telling me about their pet goldfish who've lived 20+ years. I think I read the record is like 45 years.
They're very close cousins to Koi who have ridiculous life spans of over 100 years.

Most 1st time owners 1-16 weeks.
In a bowl if the goldfish isn't over fed, and the bowl is cleaned x2 a week. 2-4 years
In a well filtered tank with weekly cleaning with 5-10 gallons per goldfish, and no overfeeding. 8-15 years.
In a pond in a mild climate with 100's of gallons per fish. 10-20 years.

If you are asking about the acual possible lifespan of one, it is really is 20 years or even more. If you are asking about how long the average person keeps one alive, it's probably a few months, and either way not nearly long enough - very, very few people keep them properly.

goldfish live up to 15 years and over if you take care of them the right way.

well I'm not sure the natural length of time but my goldfish lived to be almost a year old but dumb me left one of my brothers in charge to clean the bowl and I came home and it was dead and the bowl was full of soap but I don't think they will live longer and 10 months but you never know. the are those miracle animals

My dad works at a pet store and is smart wit animals so about 9-11 years MAX!
