It costs more to have attendents at a service station and most people are unwilling to pay the extra money. Also there are very few independent gas stations anymore. The oil companies forced them out by charging them more for the gasoline than they charged their company owned stations. And the oil companies want to sell volume and there is not enough volume in full service.

They pretty much went away in the 70,s. Now if you live in Oregon it is against the law to pump your own gas so they at least have that but I dont know if they have the rest of the services like cleaning your windshiled and checking your oil.

~~~ohh, no kidding,,,,I remember as a kid ,,,,gas stations used to give out free gifts with a fill up,,,like the Hess truck,,or key chains,,glass mugs,,,,all sorts of stuff. I think little by little they went away because of the higher cost of gas,,,and then having to pay a gas attendent on top of it was to costly for the gas station owners,,,,geee,,,,those were the days,,,,"filler up mam,?,,,wash your windows mam?,,,,can I check your oil mam,?,,,,
They're still around. my Bo-In-Law owns a Mobil and has it. Charges more for the service, tho.
About NY? I think it's required, isn't it?
But then, if they charge more for the service, and you can pump your own for cheaper.... it's all about the market.
Depends on where you live, sweetie... In NY there are HORDES of them... which is annoying cuz then you feel like you have to tip them.
SO, to answer your question, they aren't done away with, just in your state/area... I haven't found one in FL yet.
