When someone is put in prison the state (or the federal government, if it's a federal prison) takes away almost all of their rights, and in turn assumes responsibility for them. They cannot eat, shower, exercise, read, find clothes, or even walk from one place to another on their own.

Prison life is terrible. But there are certain minimum standards. They have to feed prisoners. They might as well keep them busy. We aren't giving them a chance to earn money to feed and take care of themselves. Therefore it would be cruel and inhumane to allow prisoners to suffer and die in prison by withholding food, medical care, and other basics. If we were going to do that, why not just torture them to death, because that's basically what it is.

Maybe it's just as cruel to let people suffer health problems in the outside world, especially if they are children too young to take care of themselves or if they are just victims of misfortune or bad luck. But here the theory is that eveyrone has a chance, so they should work hard to make their own living. Also, the state has not taken responsibility for them, nor has it taken steps to deprive them of their freedoms, at least not directly.

Good question, after a long period of unemployment where I had no medical insurance, I am finally starting work soon.

I read one time where people commit crimes to end up in jail in order to get medical treatment and it does not seem right. These are people who committed a crime, get 3 square meals and medical insurance, and I don't want to hear how hard it is to be in prison, prison is not supposed to be fun, it is a punishment.

Because the 45 million either can not afford it, aren't not allowed (pre-existing conditions) or chose NOT to have it for fear of being deported as they are not legal residents (they go to overburdened Emergency rooms).
Felons in the prison systems and are "wards of the state" and must received humane treatment, including health care.

that's a good question! how did you hear that serial killers have it? that's crazy?

i lived in panama for a year and it has a socialist government. yeah, i had to wait 3 hours to see a doctor about a simple ear infection, but i think the visit and the medicine only cost me ten bucks. no need for insurance there. my dentist only cost me 20 bucks. i know they arent the best of the best, but it was nice that a much larger majority of people were able to afford healthcare.

Because the taxpayers are supporting the prisoner. Clearly they cannot support all 45 million others: we pay way too much in taxes now.

when you put things that way, it's really enlightening.

Hey, as a working person in the states there were many years when I had no insurance. But I have it in Japan.
Health care shouldn't be only for those who can afford it.

Because the state of medicine and insurance in the United States is in such utter shambles that it will be decades before there is any sort of equity in health care.

For the same reason politicians have health care. Our taxes pay for it and to take care of them. Except with politicians, they are so greedy they find ways to screw their constituents and still make more money for themselves that involves more taxes.
