How many times did your baby get sick in the first year? What kind of things did he/she get sick from? I'm a new mom and we have, by the grace of God, not gotten anything. I'm just curious since we are about to go through the cold and flu season.

My child isn't in daycare. I'm a stay at home mom. He's 4 months old, bottle fed, we're non-smokers. He's around other children at church.

I think it depends on what kind of setting your child is in. In a home or a small day care environment, he/she wouldn't be exposed to many viruses and bacteria.
My daughter wasn't sick that often in the first year. When she started school though she was frequently sick, and so was I. It just took us a while to get used to all those bugs.

I, too, was very concerned about the cold and flu season last year as I had a preemie and she is a very good candidate for RSV disease. Thankfully, she didn't even get the sniffles last winter; however, had a nasty cold, for about a week, in the Spring of which we used Vicks Baby on her every night as well as a humidifier. She, too, vomited over the summer (my husband and I feel that we didn't burp her well enough) in the car. It was awful! I didn't know a 12 mo. old could vomit so much. We ended up tossing her car seat and buying a new one as it was everywhere!
All you can really do dress your baby warm, sanitize, and keep your home clean. Does your baby go to daycare? If so, that may put you at a higher risk of the cold or flu.

My child is 10 months and is actually sick with her first cold-- I have recently been going to playgroups and am quite positive thats where she got it from since everyone else that was there has come down with it-- but they have to get exposed to it at some point-- I think we've been very lucky and she is also breastfeed which I wholeheartedly believe cuts down sigificantly on the frequency (and intensity) of colds etc. Most of my friends with little ones her same age that are formula fed have experienced significantly more illness and several drawn out ear infections etc.

Our oldest is almost 11, our youngest is 5. It has been awhile, but I remember sniffles & an ear ache or two. I am also a stay at home mom. Our oldest was in daycare a short time, but I don't recall anything more serious than the typical illness I mentioned. I guess we were lucky as well.

I nursed my babies and I think that is why they were never sick. I am closed minded about that, tho I do have a heart for those moms who can't do it. You gotta feed your baby right.....
My first child did not get sick until he was 18 months.
Maybe being the first and not being in day care helped...
I have heard tho that ear infections are common and some times hard to detect until you go to the doctor.
I think you and your husband should get flu shots, that will you guys not bring anything home.

My little boy never got sick until we took him to visit my parents. They both smoke like chimneys and my dad refused to smoke outside because "he should not have to go outside his own house to smoke, and secondhand smoke never killed anyone" Keep in mind, that's what he said, not what I believe. He also says all the research to the contrary is made up. When we went down there, my little boy got congested, runny nose, and runny yellow diarrhea. According to my dad, it wasn't the smoke, it was the change in climate.
