I talked with a representative from the Art Institute today, and I was asking questions about both career fieds because I am very interested in both. So I am just asking for educated opinions about both careers so I know which one would be a better one to go into!

For what it's worth this is what I know about each.

Fashion merchandising: design and layout retail merchandising. can be everything from individual store work to corporate level designs. Works with people very creative. down side is the corporate world can be crushing to the artistic type.

Interior Design: design and layout homes and businesses. can be everything from small remodels to full scale business lay-out designs. Need to be good with numbers, yes budgeting and forecasting is your job. You also manage and report on and take responsibility for all the contractors involved.

I agree with the previous answer and would like to add the following:

Fashion merchandising deal more with people
Interior designing deal more with things

In Fashion merchandising you are likely to be in corporate job unless you open your own shop in the future. Even then, you are running a business and less "fashion merchandising".

Interior designer can work for any number of companies as well as work for themselves.

Best wishes.
