My girlfriend had a baby and now she is all depressed because she says her vagina is big and open and doesnt look right. She had vaginal childbirth about 5 months ago.
I dont know what to tell her because my kids were born 20 yrs ago and by c section. Should her vagina be snug or is something wrong with her. What should she do? Is this normal? Will she ever return to normal?

Her baby was about 7 pounds I think. She said she had to have an episiotomy and maybe that has something to do with it.

Crazy enough, I am a nurse, but work in Onco and have no experience with the gynecology end of things.

all the healing is done by now. is it possible she had a laceration that was not repaired properly? she should be checked by a gynecologist to be sure all is well. when she is done having children, she could always have vaginal reconstruction and tighten it all up again. very popular these days

when giving child birth the body, especially the uterus, is in a recovery process. The best way to strenthen your vaginal muscles - which is normal to be stretchy like elastic; not to worry it is abosolutely normal. You are sure to get your self back to normal by doings kegels you squeeze your vagina in and out do this a repetitions 10-15 times. When you suck in you hold for 5 seconds and then release. The only other way I can say is so you can understand better is to squeeze together like you would your buttocks. After about a month it does not seen to be improved or improving then see the doctor, they can do a procedure they call - making you a virgin again - But I had an episiotomy and these thins seemed to help do as often as possible.

This is not normal with natural childbirth, but it's common to feel changes when an episiotomy has been done. Episiotomies are from the dark ages, and should never be done unless the infant is in serious distress. Otherwise it basically amounts to genital mutilation. Many women heal relatively well, but many others have continuing problems. Her OB may not have sewn her up well. If it's interfering with her sex life, she should have it looked at; she may have to have reconstructive surgery. Here's some good info about episiotomy if she plans on having more children: http://www.efn.org/~djz/birth/obmyth/epis.html

Probably not, but don't tell her that. Did she have a big baby? Usually when you have a vaginal childbirth you stay big unless the doctor put some stitches in you, if he didn't well that is a problem. Like you, all my children were c-section, but I really don't know what else to say, unless she goes to a doctor and have herself sewn up tight a bit.

Every women who has natural childbirth loses elasticty(sp?) in the vagina walls. Its usually not noticeable I have had 4 kids all natural and I don't notice any diffrence. She might just be over reacting.. She can do kegal exercise might help her "tighten" up but its normal.

maybe she had to have stitches and they just forgot to sew her up, that has happened a few times, if this is her first baby she should pretty much go back to her old self again, or if she has more then she is probably as wide open as the Lincoln Tunnel. Any time you going to have sex, douche with vinegar and water just before.

it should have returned to normal by now, is it really big, or is she just upset? most of the time its just in her mind, though there are some differences, its natural.
