Oh, there was an A&E documentary on this this morning (you could probably go to www.aetv.com to find it) about violence in the workplace.

Several years ago, I think in the late '80's, there was a rash of postal workers causing violence among themselves. I forget, it wasn't a huge amount of people, considering the number of postal workers out there, but with it being United States Postal Workers involved, it was high-profile.

Jay Leno and other media outlets coined the phrase "going postal" as a joke, and the term stuck. At one point, the USPS put out a statement saying that that term is offensive and that it makes light of a very serious tragedy, since people actually died over that.

It originated with an incident in which a disgruntled U.S. Postal Service worker shot a bunch of his colleagues.

Postal workers suffering job stress and working it off by shooting people at their workplaces. Happened a lot for a while. Hasn't now for some time, thank God.

It comes from a postal worker shooting coworkers in Edmond, OK in the 80's.

a few years back some post office workers started killing people in a out burst of anger over being fired, so the slang for having a fit of temper and harming or killing people caused the slang going postal..........

Weren't there a couple cases in the 80s, when disgruntled post office employees pulled out guns at work? Don't know if this is really true, or just urban legend.

It originated from the post office worker who had a shooting spree at his workplace many years ago.

im sure it was coined by a co worker of the man who went to his job at the post office and shot everyone to death in the 80's
