He was a threat to the Aprtheid regime and lead attacks against them as part of the Militarised ANC. He was considered a Terrorist, then became a world Hero.

He was a leader of an organisation which murdered people. His excuse was a fight for the rights of black africans in the republic of South Africa. His chosen method was by setting off bombs in crowded places- eg. supermarkets, which killed mostly black africans.
He was caught and jailed. Then someone in a liberal newspaper decided to make him the icon of the struggle.
As such he was a disappointment because while in jail he became totally fed up with violence and emerged as a peaceful man. This annoyed many so-called activists, including his wife. He ended up divorced (and good riddance)
