Regeneration is the process by which organisms can regrow body parts after losing them. For example, a lizard will drop its tail when caught by an enemy, but then a new tail will grow. Starfish will also regenerate--even if you cut them in half. Both halves will regrow to form two new starfish.

Chop an earthworm in half... you will get two earthworms, one half regenerating the head, the other the tail.
Lizards wil regen tails if they are pulled off.
Your liver... take half out, and your body will regenerate the other half.

Your cat catches a lizard. The lizard will "release" the end of its tail. The tail end keeps squirming, which keeps the cat occupied, while the lizard runs off.
The lizard will grow a new tail end; that's regeneration.
