the main unit is outside hooked up to electric furnace inside.
i noticed it wasn't getting cool inside the house and removed the cover to the coils and they were froze white with ice. when it thawed it worked fine but will eventually freeze up again. between the thawing and freezing there is water dripping off into the floor as there is no drip pan and no room for one. we have been replacing the filters since the first freeze up but the first time we replaced them they were very stopped up

The refrigerant charge isn't right. You've got to call a repair person. The coil in the furnace could be partially blocked too.

I had this problem over and over again with my AC when I lived in FL. Basically the unit is having to work too hard or the filter needs to be replaced and it will freeze up. Most of the time all you need to do is turn it off for about a day (no point in turning it back on any sooner because it will only freeze up again) and making sure your filter is clean. If you have already replaced the filters and are keeping them clean or changing as needed the unit should not still be freezing up. Like I said, make sure you are leaving it off for at least the whole day.

This happened to me several times in FL and even when I would keep the filters clean it would do it again sometimes. I think it was a cheap unit as it was only two years old. Sometimes I would be a WEEK without air because someone would turn it back on again before it was all the way thawed. Sucks I know.

If you continue to have problems you can have someone come out and look at it but all they will do it tell you what I did and then charge you unless there is some major problem and it needs fixed or replaced.

sounds like the "A" coil is full of dirt/filth or the unit needs charged.
