Walking around Washington or New York I feel like I am in a mausoleum. Roman letters & dates, Greek, Corinthian, Roman columns - seems irrelevant today.

Not all banks and government buildings have columns or are massive.
Government buildings like to copy the columns from the Parthenon of ancient Greece, were wisdom, thinking, and democratic government traditionally started.
Banks like to look like a safe place to put your money.
Buildings are extremely expensive and take a long time to build; they are not replaced as easily as women change their dress on the latest news from Paris. The money can be spent on things more important than appearance.
All of America and the world are not like D.C. or New York.
The guards are there because some people try to steal money and blow up government buildings. Look at "Guy Fawks Day" in England; the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament. ---Jim

LOL.. i wish you were my dad!! LOL your too funny. Well i dont think its your daughter thats causing it always to be just a 1st date. It could be your gun collection, or the fact that your telling them that your dream would be to get through an anger management class without the cops being called on you. Honestly i dont think there is anything that could be done about these boys being intimidated by you. I think that these boys are too soft for your daughter. Keep up doing what your doing. The man that is supposed to be meant for your daughter will show up one day, and everyday after because nothing scares him, and the things you do entertain him. Good luck..

They are meant to impress - to impart a sense of majesty and permanence.

The guards and guns are there to intimidate.
