Go somewhere really dark with no artificial light on the ground level.
This way light doesn't enter your eyes. The moon will be bright as anything you have ever seen.
I did midnight fishing in Perth Australia and could not believe the size and brightness of the sky. The moon lit up all around us when fishing.
I was in the middle of nowhere. Try it if you can find a really dark spot.

There are many fine methods available today.
Kerosene or gas and a match are simple yet effective.
Fireworks are always enjoyable. But my favorite is torching marshmallows. Not only does it look cool, but they taste great!
