Water. Yes brake fluid.

Usually, physical damge causes the most trouble.
Chrome plating is not very chemically reactive. The biggest problem you would encounter is the material that has been chromed corroding beneath it.

Rust, the plating or metal under the chrome will give way before the finish will.
