It depends what you classify by work.
I have worked in warehouses where I walked and lifted for 8 hours and now I sit at a desk but the amount of responsibility and stress is a lot worse. (I am this close to an ulcer) Also once you hit a certain level you don't get paid for overtime. I've been stuck in the office til 10 pm on more than one occasion. They don't care, they just want the work done.

Also if I make a mistake now it can effect the entire company. If I didn't fill an order correctly by shipping the wrong thing sure it was a pain but the company wouldn't close over it.

When you are in a lower wage job when you go home you leave the work behind. Most higher paying jobs in the very least it is in the back of your mind. The deadline, the problem, something...it's always nagging you.

It's a trade off. I'd love to go back to a warehouse job but I can't afford it.

Higher wages are often tied to larger responsibilty not harder labor. The CEO of a 30,000 employee sits around on his/her butt all day but if they make the wrong decisions they could cost 30,000 people their jobs and lots of others their money. The trash collector who works his/her butt off all day really doesn't affect that many people if he/she messes up from time to time.

I think it boils down to getting a good education, beyond graduating high school. Oh, with the exception of professional sports players ... they play so hard ! Oh, and singers, they sing so hard ! Oh, and actors, they pretend so hard to be someone or somewhere they aren't.

Because the more you have pursued your education you get more money for doing less work. If you work hard in your younnger years, you can relax when you're older.
