Calligraphy is the art of writing. Technically there have always been someone out there with the nice writing. There were scribes in the middle ages and all asian writing is still called calligraphy. Calligraphy is typically done with pens, fountain or dip pens, or brushes. The most typical form now is the italic hand which is seen on a lot wedding invitations. Back when everything was handwritten, cultured people learned how to write nicely as well as their faster penmanship. People still get paid a good deal to handwrite things nicely.
