im from alabama. could be brown recluse. they are very abundant here and verryyy dangerous. if you get bit go directly to the hospital. it wont kill a healthy human but the infected area will basically rot off and you'll have a big chunk of muscle and fat tissue missing for a while and a huge scar for the rest of your life. just hope its an imitator like a wolf spider. they are hard to tell apart.

It may be this one:

"A closely related species that is believed to have been introduced from southern Europe, Loxosceles rufescens, the Mediterranean recluse, has become established in the steam tunnels of Penn State and in other locations in the Northeast. These spiders are not known to have bitten any employees or students, despite their long sojourn in the Penn State steam tunnels. The bites of these spiders do not produce the severe reactions typically associated with the brown recluse spider."

Many other spiders also imitate or are mistaken for the brown recluse, which seems to be what you fear, as others have pointed out.

Probably a wolf spider or a nursery-web spider. Funny how everyone wants to say brown recluse, but there aren't any records from MA and they don't have a white stripe on the thorax.

It sounds like a Brown Recluse or it could be a Wandering Spider. Let's
just hope they're dead.
