when i step on the acceleration pedal, black smoke pours out of my muffler. i think its clogged. other times when i press on the acceleration, the dark smoke isnt as bad. sometimes its clear smoke. i've checked the oil and other miscalanious stuff in my engine, and for the most part everything looks alright. i have a 1998 mitsubishi eclipse gs. what do you guys think could be causing this problem? could it really be clogged?

black smoke usually means;

1. you're burning oil
2 or you're running a very rich air/fuel misture.

running rich means your engine is getting a fuel/air mixture that has too much gas in it. that causes the dirty smoke

i think this is what's happening. that's why your car feels like it's clogged. cuz you drove your car like this so long that the black smoked fouled up your catalytic converter and it's not flowing as well anymore.

you'll have to replace the catalytic as well as the oxygen sensors, then repair whatever emissions component caused your car to fail and go into "rich mode" in the first place

next time don't ignore the "check engine" light

start by going to a national parts store like autozone and ask them to pull the codes for you. it's a 1998 so you have OBD-2 system. it'll take them 2 minutes. they just plug the code reader in under the dash, all vehicles have a plug there it's required by law. they read the codes, then you can post the codes here and we'll help figure out what's wrong with that car.

parts stores don't usually charge for this service. just come back post the codes and we'll know more

Black Smoke From Exhaust

Black smoke is an indication of an engine running very rich. You should have a check engine light on. But anyway, check the normal things like a clogged air filter, or fuel filter. The O2 sensor can be bad, or a malfunctioning catalytic converter. Anything related to the fuel system is suspect right now. Anything that will fool the ECm to think that the engine is running lean and the ecm adds more fuel to the mix. Take the car to a reputable garage for testing and diagnosis.
good luck

visable smoke of any kind from a tailpipe indicates a cumbustion problem in the engine, either incomplete compustion due to fuel injector problem, or contaminated with oil or coolent. Better get that car into the shop.

I'm not familiar with your auto (I'm in UK), but if it's diesel, this would indicate time to have the injectors checked and replaced if necessary, or have the fuel flow checked on the diesel pump. If it's petrol engined, sorry can't help you any more than the first two answers. Good luck!

first if the car does blow black smoke it may indact that the fuel system is overly rich and that would also set the check engine light on, second how many km does the car have? it may be time to replace the oxygen sensor, you should ge the codes read and this may save you some fuel, if the fuel system is working fine then it may be your engine temperature sensor that is malfuctioning or you may be low on coolant.

If its blue smoke its oil. If its black smoke its running way to rich. Better have it checked out.

combustion chambers are getting carboned up.
have a mechanic clean it for you or buy a can of carburator cleaner kind that goes and mixes with the gas and take that bad boy out for a fast spin.
