I ran out of money this summer so among other things I stopped watering my lawn. It got hot. The lawn turned brown. Kind of cool, because you don't have to mow much then, which meant my boyfriend didn't lose those extra pounds he gained over the winter. But now with a bit of rain and some watering, my lawn has come back, but it's more weeds then just grass now. What are some steps I can take to get rid of the weeds and get grass back in place. (It's really the landlord's lawn, but he took $75 off the rent when I agreed to take care of it myself -- oops!)

First spray weed & feed to kill weeds and fertilize whatever grass still exsists. After a few days, top dress with topsoil, meaning rake a layer of soil over the entire lawn (even the healthy grass) and seed with grass seed. Ensure to water daily (even just 15-20 min) because if the tender new shoots of grass dry out, they will die and it will be all for not. Good luck!

Use a broadleaf herbicide on the lawn. You can find them at any garden center, home depot, lowes etc.

They come either in a liquid form that you would spray directly on the weeds or in a granual form sometimes mixed with fertilizers. That should help kill the weeds.

I'd recommend using a "weed & feed" type product. It'll kill the weeds and boost the grass growth. And if you get more dry weather while you're doing this, water it.
