It can work, if the symbol "1" stands for something other than it usually does. Remember, the numbers we use - 1,2,3, etc - are just symbols for a set value. "2" is a symbol for two units, etc. In this instance, the symbol "1" stands for a value of 1.5. Therefore, 1+1 would equal a value of 3.
