usually the reason you are not on the "a" team is because your abilities are not up to the standards required....it be more advisable to join the junior varsity or b or c teams so that you can get some playing time and prove your value...remember many later superstars did not even make their high school teams

Depends on what level you are talking. If it's junior high or high school, it should be 3 times a day for at least 5 days (maybe even 6 days). Maybe practice with your athletic friends. If you are not a starter by then, then I'd be upset. Ask the coach why you are not starting in a calm and polite way. Good luck!

Basketball is a mental sport. Your not gonna get on the starting squad unless you show the coach what your made of. So, instead of just doing what your coach says. Step it up a notch. Show him you have no fears. When running and playing, dont run with the team, always be a step ahead. Dont worry about looking "weird" and getting teased if you run ahead of your team. Maybe you running harder, will make them run harder. which in a sense will make your whole team better. Then your coach will compliment you with some playing time for being a team leader.

Practice...but beyond practice and play, figure out why you aren't on the "a" team. Meaning, are your basketball skills lacking? Are you slow? Do you have a low basketball IQ? etc... If you know and understand your weaknesses, you can build them into strengths. Basketball is not all about your physical play, but mostly your mental. As in where to be, predicting a pass, or doing a pick and roll. Watching basketball will help your game as well.
Also your speed is a big factor in basketball.

you have made a good beginning but you are obviously
not as good as some of the others. besides natural
talent which you cannot do much about you might need
instruction from a coach or trainer. when you get
better than whoever is starting now, you will become
a starter.
