Or like someone has poured old black oil on the area though it is not oily, just that color. Cause? And what can I do about it ?

I was told by my neighbor when we looked at ours, it's a virus type thing for grass. Similar to mold.

Go to your local Home Depot or Lowes or whatever it is you have at your convenience and have them help you. They will be able to recommend something to put on your lawn to make it feel better.

Probably (and without a photo it's impossible to completely diagnose) this is "slime mold" and it's fairly common during particularly wet weather or when the lawn has been overwatered. The mold is more an eyesore than a problem. It generally doesn't have any long-term problems. If you're already out spraying the roses with a fungicide, you might top this off, but I wouldn't run out for a fungicide JUST to treat this one spot. With dry weather, it'll go away on its own.

sounds like mold, go to a good local garden place and ask what sort of mold it is and how to kill it,

maybe it was oil.

Grow something other than grass so you wont have to mow it.
