you change your subtraction to addition and change your positive 1 to a negative 1

-7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3...

You start at -6 and take away 1 more, so you go back on the line, ending up with -7.

Don't listen to the first answer, it is dead wrong!!! A neg minus a number is just like adding two negatives together. So.......

-6 - 1 is really -6 + -1 =-?

For a lot of people the easiest way to think about negative numbers is to think of winter temperatures. Suppose it's six below zero and then the temperature goes down one degree. It will then be seven below.
